Why Did You Become A Stage Manager?

By February 3, 2013September 8th, 2021No Comments

Stage Managing a production is hard.

No, really. It’s a job that can often feel thankless, and it can be incredibly frustrating.

So, why did you decide to become a Stage Manager?

If you answered, “Because I love the Theatre”, we get it.

Theatre holds a special place in our hearts. Communities small & large come together to create something bigger than the sum of its parts. That’s a special experience. Being a part of building that experience is something that stays with us. We’re a special tribe, and membership is for life.

What the audience sees is a final product. If the Stage Manager did their job well, that audience will hardly notice. That’s the point. We work to create something that feels seamless & natural. The applause at the end may be directed towards the performers, but we all know that it is deserved by many more.

A good Stage Manager is a jack-of-all-trades. They work long hours, overseeing a production that has many moving parts. Successful Stage Managers are people with:

  • good habits
  • great organization skills
  • an uncanny ability to manage many egos
  • the ability to see the “bigger picture”
  • self-control in high-stress situations

Those are just a few crucial qualities a good Stage Manager must possess. We don’t get the glory, and many may not consider us as important as the “artists” (but we know better).

Stage Managers are also incredibly resourceful people. We also have a pretty good sense of humor. The job demands an incredible amount of patience & understanding. In the months to come, we’re going to further explore this unique occupation. We’re also excited to profile many of the other critical jobs that make an event a success.

What’s even more exciting? We’re working on a project management solution to give peace-of-mind to the unsung heroes of event production. Stage Managers, Lighting Designers, Directors, Stage Techs, and more are about to get a big boost in productivity.
